Memorial and honour board
May their undaunted spirit soar with the angels forever.
Your service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
The major memorial features soaring wings above a central stone pillar encircled by twin bands of forged steel containing the words shown above.
The right wing is visibly curled and damaged - a reminder that despite the trials and challenges they faced, the spirit of the men and women who served remained committed to their country and resilient to their cause..
Stones from Tarin Kot
Along with the heat and dust, this vast landscape is covered with stone.
Beneath the wings a pillar of stone has been formed from a base of Tableland basalt and topped by rocks gathered within a 20km radius of Camp Russell, Uruzgan Provence Afghanistan and carried back as a worthy and befitting gesture to their fallen brothers.
Your service and sacrifice
will never be forgotten
The Honour Board proudly displays the names of the men who died while serving their nation in the fight against terror in Afghanistan. This sculpture is surrounded by air and light and features them all as brothers together and yet all as individuals.
An evening visit to the Avenue reveals a quite different perspective, with the 24 hour lighting giving a ghostly presence and a unique outdoor chapel reverence to the site.
Explosive Detection Dogs and Special Operations Military Working Dogs
In the shaded area behind the Honour Board, mounted upon a solid basalt outcrop a plaque recalls the commitment and dedication of our sometimes forgotten heroes, the Explosion Detection Dogs (EDD) and Special Operations Military Working Dogs (SOMWD).
These brave and much loved animals gave their lives in the line of duty, sometimes alongside their masters.
